Frieze (USA)
This is a Frieze. It was manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1900–15 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This is likely an independent frieze. There do not appear to be any elements that continue below this section. This paper functions in the same fashion as a crown frieze in that it lets the patterned wall stop short of the ceiling. This would make the wall appear less dense and intrusive and would visually raise the ceiling.
Papers such as this increase the diversity of early 20th-century papers in the museum’s collection and broaden the picture of how people were designing their walls. This gift would be an asset to our collection and would benefit researchers and historic home interpretations.
