Sidewall (USA)
This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by Thomas Strahan & Co., Manufactory. It is dated ca. 1925 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This sidewall is a mass market paper produced for a low to mid-price range. It has definite modernist leanings with so much white ground showing. The design is unusual: brightly colored butterflies and flowers appear to float across the surface against a background of dense black and white stripes.
The paper under consideration would increase the diversity of early 20th-century papers in the museum’s collection and broaden the picture of how people were designing their walls. While we do have a selection of papers from the 1920s, the majority are in the traditional or Colonial Revival style. This proposed gift would be an asset to our collection and would benefit researchers and historic home interpretations.
It is credited Gift of Theodore A. Gantz.
Its dimensions are
Overall: 844.6 x 51 cm (27 ft. 8 1/2 in. x 20 1/16 in.)
It is inscribed
Printed in selvedge: "T.S.C." followed by thistle logo, "Made in U.S.A." Printed in opposite selvedge: "6389".
