Platter (England)
This is a platter. It was manufactured by Mintons. It is dated 1874 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is molded and glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
English tin-glazed earthenware made during hte nineteenth century, called majolica, was produced at many potteries throughout the country. Majolica wares included both functional tablewares and decorative pieces and incorporated designs based on -among other things- Italian Renaissance ceramics, oriental porcelains, and traditional English pottery. The rich colors of the glazes and large scale of the pieces are typical of majolica made a Mintons and other factories. (Recent Acquisitions, Dec. Arts 04/1992)
