In eighteenth-century France, the demand for birdcages was significant enough--both Louis XV and Louis XVI commissioned elaborate birdcages to be placed amoung the orange trees in the garden at Versailles--to necessitate the forming of royally chartered guilds (cageiolers) to control the industry. Though the cage designs varied, there were two essential forms: cages chanteresses, which were high cages for male songbirds, and cages muettes, low cages, similar to this example, for female birds kept for breeding.
