Print, Ornamental Design
This is a Print. It was created by Johann Ladenspelder. It is dated ca. 1550 and we acquired it in 1944. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This curious engraving adopts elements of the grotesque to form a seemingly allegorical narrative. A nude woman rests on firm ground, propped against a candelabrum and holding a chalice above her head. Behind her, a winged putto leans on a scrolling architectural element and holds a reptilian creature aloft on a fork. Above them, reality gives way to a floating world of enigmatic creatures tenuously balanced amid plant tendrils and trophies.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
