Posey Holder (USA)

This is a Posey holder. It is dated mid-19th century and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is silver filigree. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Posy holders, popular in the 1850's and 60's, were filled with bouquets of fragrant flowers and carried by fashionable ladies to dances and soirees. The flowers were held in place with a straight pin, and the holder could be sercured to the wearer's fingure by an attached ring. some posy holders featured convertible tripod bases which allowed them to site upright on a dressing table or mantel shelf. (Jewelry 1989-90)
