Drawing, Study for Candelabrum Motif and Strapwork Escutcheon

This is a Drawing. It was created by Unknown. It is dated ca. 1560 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is pen and brown ink, black chalk, brush and violet watercolor on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This sketch illustrates concepts for two seemingly unrelated designs. The plasticity of the design for the escutcheon, which is anchored at top and bottom by a winged fantastical head and a mask, stands in contrast to the flatly-rendered candelabrum, comprised of stacked classical vases atop a base formed by two sphinxes and surmounted by a flaming urn.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors and from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.
