Print, Exterior View of the Aquatic Theater, Sadler's Wells, London

This is a Print. It is dated 1813 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is hand colored etching on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The first Sadler's Wells Theater, in Finsbury, Islington, was built in 1683 as a music house. A drama theater was built on the site in 1765, with a pleasure garden adjoining. The house was transformed in 1804 by the addition of a large swimming pool, and became famous for its water spectacles as well as its pantomimes. The theater declined in the middle of the nineteenth century, but was rebuilt in 1930 by Lilian Baylis, becoming the home of the famous English Ballet Company bearing the Sadler's Wells name.

It is credited Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Freund.
