Fingernail Guard (China)

This is a Fingernail guard. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1969. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Long fingernails, esteemed in traditional Chinese court societies, were sometimes protected by ornate jeweled covers like this pair. (Body Language: Jewelry and accessories from the National Design Museum 3/14/95 - 8/21/95)
