Collection of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

Our curators have highlighted 11 objects that are related to Bowl (Persia, Kashan), ca. 13th–14th century.

Flat rectangular bag of heavy green satin, embroidered in gold and silver metallic yarns and coral-colored silk. On one side the pious pelican is plucking her breast to provide sustenance for her young. Bishop's crooks point inward from the corners. On the other side, a stylized flowering branch in a pitcher, with animals and birds. The embroidery is worked through the satin into a heavy linen backing. Remains of loop and knot fastening at top; coral and gold cord edging, with small tassels at intervals; lined with coral silk taffeta.

Rectangular, with four palmette bracket feet. Hinged cover with high canted sides and flat top. Gold, decorated in translucent red, green and blue, and opaque white champleve enamel. On cover, lion couchant and floral motifs. On sides small circular medallions with white fan-tail pigeons on red ground, and leaf motifs. On base, formal floral design.

It has an outer case or box with concave sides and domed cover, covered with garnet-colored silk embroidered in yellow, blue, black and cream, with small pieces of mirror applied. Lined with white crepe de Chine.

Color chart plate with shades of gray, green and yellow, defining the full range of vitrifiable colors available with porcelain. Shows variation of individual colors when floral decoration makes a mix of solid color and white, giving us an idea of the aesthetic concerns of the age.
