Border (Italy)

This is a Border. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1955. Its medium is cotton and its technique is needle lace, ground of loop and twist with twist return. It is a part of the Textiles department.

In 1872-1873, in an effort to relieve an economic depression on the island of Burano in the Venetian lagoon, Paulo Fambri (1827-1897) and Contessa Andriana Marcello (1839-1893) started a needle-lace school. Their intention was to copy the Venetian needle laces of the 17th century. Queen Margherita of Italy was the patroness. The laces were sold in Paris, London, and New York as well as in Venice. Among the clients were the couture house of Worth, European nobility and wives of political figures. In the middle of the twentieth century lace-making was reduced to the level of creating souvenirs for tourists until the school closed in 1973.

This object was donated by Marian Hague.
