Coffeepot (USA)

This is a coffeepot. It was made by R. & W. Wilson, Philadelphia. It is dated 1825–50 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Louise B. Scott. It is credited Gift of Louise B. Scott.

White, spherical tea urn with thin, vertically long silver handle at the top. Also has a silver spigot and silver, vertically latched bottom section at the base of the urn, where it is heated. On either side of the middle of the urn are two silver handles, presumably to lift and carry the whole piece.

A silver tea and coffee service made up of six components: a teapot, a coffee pot, a creamer, a sugar bowl, a waste bowl and a tray. All the vessels are rectangular in shape with stepped feet and thin, angular handles and spouts. They are minimalist in their decoration with small, incised lines on the lids and feet of the teapot, coffee pot and sugar bowl, and on the rims and feet of the waste bowl and creamer. The incised lines run along the edge of the long, rectangular tray. The coffee pot, teapot and sugar bowl have pyramidal orange plastic finials on their lids. The teapot and coffee pot have orange plastic bands on the top and bottom brackets of their handles. The overall feel of the service is modern with accented geometric and linear qualities.
