The general shape is that of a boat with a prow. Imagine a genteel scalloped teacup with a sizeable yet dignified protuding nose. The curvacious body is fluted (like a pumpkin has curved pleats) and the rim is scalloped evocative of a sea shell. The ear-shaped handle has a small raised nub at the highest part of the curve. The handle begins about midway up the body, curving away from it until it rises above the rim, then curves downward and reattaches at the rim. The pouring spout is generous, beginning from just above the base, flaring widely to the rim. The landscape visible to the viewer fills most of the body. Starting at the far right there is a three-story house, with each story set back from the one below. Or it could be three separate structures set upon a hill so that perspective-wise, the top house which is furthest away appears above and behind the middle house which is above and behind the lowest house. Vegetation of indeterinate type rises above and behind the houses. At the center of the scene are three tree trunks with three sparse horizontal branches at the top - resembling. three telephone poles with outstretched arms. To the left of the trunks there is some unclear decoration comprised of 4 circular shapes arranged vertically one behind the other, with shading at their centers suggesting perspective - eg as if the front shape cast a shadow on the one behind it which cast a shadow on the one behind it etc. The front shape has a circular opening in the middle - like a bagel. We only see the top 3/4 of the bagel. The bottom is obscured by what could be a stream or a path. To the left of the 4 shapes a series of closely spaced horizontal lines of different lengths ascends vertically. The visual effect suggests clouds. More vegetation and rock shapes continue to the left of the “clouds.” A long sinuous branch trails upward from the rocks towards and under the spout. The leaves on the branch and its off-shoots look like feathered arrows. The foot of the sauce boat is decorated with an abstract pattern of floral motifs linked by swags. Part of the interior rim is visible showing a ribbon border with diamond shapes (and dots inside them) separated periodically by vertical oval shapes. Areas of rust-colored discoloration at the rim and at the bottom edge of the base.
