Basket (England), ca. 1770

This is a Basket. It is dated ca. 1770 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is pierced and glazed earthenware (creamware). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Creamware production started at the beginning of the eighteenth century and was the main product in England between 1760 and 1820. It was able to overtake other earthenware due to the appeal of its light color and weight, similar to porcelain. This fineness allowed for more elaborate decoration, such as the piercing seen in this basket, likely used to hold and display fruit.

This object was bequest of Erskine Hewitt. It is credited Bequest of Erskine Hewitt.
