Drawing, Study of Pale Pink Peonies
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Sophia L. Crownfield. It is dated early 20th century and we acquired it in 1937. Its medium is brush and watercolor, graphite on gray paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The pale pink peony flower heads appear to float and dance on the light gray paper. This seemingly quick study shows how Crownfield’s skilled application of light and dark paint created volume and liveliness. Its potential suitability as a wallpaper treatment is noted in pencil along the upper edge with the inscription: “good for wall paper border.”
