Tsuba
This is a Tsuba. It was made by Kawaji Tomotomi. It is dated early 18th century and we acquired it in 1936. Its medium is iron, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Expert carving and flat inlay techniques were used to create this tsuba in the form of a saihai, a military baton used by commanders to signal instructions on the battlefield. Long flowing lines represent the tassel and a strong diagonal forms the baton’s shaft, which was often lacquered or gilded. Saihai were treasured objects and many were preserved as family heirlooms.
