Panoramic Handscreen (France)
This is a Panoramic handscreen. It is dated ca. 1830 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is paper, wood, bone, iron and its technique is colored engraving on paper, turned wood handle, carved ivory fittings. It is a part of the Textiles department.
The panoramic hand screen, first devised in France around 1830, is a handy home version of public panorama entertainments. This one contains a hand-colored engraving of Le Parc Versailles, printed as a long paper strip and attached to rollers on either side. The ivory spindles allow the viewer to look at seven different views of the park.
