Jar And Lid (China (for export))

This is a Jar and lid. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1926. Its medium is enameled porcelain, bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Many Western countries were enthralled by Asian wares at the end of the nineteenth century. Fine porcelain exports were highly valued, fashionable items, resulting in China producing porcelain for sale specifically in Western countries, namely America. This jar, one of a pair, was made for export and features “traditional” Chinese imagery, including enameled fight scenes, depictions of Chinese dress, and a bronze foo-dog seated on top of its lid.

This object was bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane.

  • Museum purchase from Decorative Arts Association Acquisition Fund.
  • 1988-83-1
