Print, Mercury, plate from a suite of 6 ornamental designs with the Judgement of Paris
This is a Print. It was designed by Adriaen Collaert and engraved by Adriaen Collaert. It is dated ca. 1690 and we acquired it in 1920. Its medium is engraving on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Intertwining grotesques encircle an image of Mercury in this print. Within the frame, coiling dragons and the twisted torso of a seraph echo the shape of the god’s caduceus. They recall decorations in the Domus Aurea. Such stylized forms offset the naturalistic figure of Mercury, highlighting different modes of classical revival.
