Print, Pendant Design

This is a Print. It was designed by Hans Collaert and published by Philips Galle and print maker: Adriaen Collaert. It is dated 1582 and we acquired it in 1920. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

An oarsman reclines on a sphinx’s scaly tail in this design for a pendant. Enameled, bejeweled, and dangling from a noblewoman’s gown, the imperious sphinx appears fully tamed. Like the other marine monsters in this series designed by Collaert, she symbolizes the sea’s abundance, harnessed by Flemish fishermen and merchants.
