Galerie métallique des grands hommes français (Great Men of France) Medal
This is a Medal. It was designed by Armand-Auguste Caqué. It is dated 1822 and we acquired it in 1907. Its medium is cast bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The Galerie métallique des grands hommes français (Great Men of France) medal series was conceived by Louis Bérard (1783-1859), a politician and industrialist active during the reign of Napoleon. Begun in August 28, 1816, the collection of 118 medals was an evocation of France’s past cultural and scientific achievements, and was a patriotic remedy to country’s humiliation at Waterloo the previous year. Napoleon is conspicuously absent from the series, as are the French kings and political figures. The non-profit project was funded by a group of wealthy shareholders, each of whom contributed a sum of 500 francs. Twenty-two artists engraved portraits for the series, which was complete by 1837.
