A Very Large Nazuna Vase
This is a vase. It was made by Hitomi Hosono. It is dated 2016 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is moulded, carved and hand-built porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Hitomi Hosono cites nature as her primary point of inspiration and meticulously studies botanical forms to create pots that are covered in leaves, buds, and flower sprigs. Stylistically, this piece represents the rebirth of the ancient technique of sprig-making also used by Wedgwood, while also looking to the future of English and Japanese ceramics. This cross-cultural dialogue relates to themes in the current exhibition Passion for the Exotic: Japonism, on view in the Teak Room nearby.
It is credited Museum purchase from the Charles E. Sampson Memorial Fund and through gift of Emily Rauh Pulitzer, Barbara E. Deisroth, Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, and Martha Alexander.
