Drawing, Interior Concept
This is a Drawing. It was from the office of William M. Schmidt. It is dated ca. 1960 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is brush and acrylic on illustration board. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This interior concept drawing by Bill Schmidt Studio demonstrates that interior schemes were equally important in the design and production of successful automobiles. While many car designs embrace aeronautical elements, this drawing shows how sleek chrome details were also applied to the auto interior. The bare, minimal steering wheel and utilitarian seating suggest features of a racing car, while the gentle curving black leather upholstery recalls the lithe office chairs of the 1958 Eames Aluminum Group.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Paul Herzan and from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
Its dimensions are
53.3 × 86.4 cm (21 × 34 in.)
