Poster, Ho Ho Ho, 1978

This is a Poster. It was made for (as the client) Herman Miller Furniture Company. It is dated 1978 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is screenprint on glossy red paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This poster is part of a set of four designs used to promote the 1978 Herman Miller Christmas Party. Following the theme of "sounds of Christmas," in-house designer Linda Powell adopted the phrase "Ho, Ho, Ho" associated with jolly Santa Claus, who she depicts in the uppermost "O." By orienting the onomotopeic phrase vertically, Powell spatially translates the cadence of the phrase, and suggests the convivial attitude of the company party. The crimson background and frosty, white lettering further communicate the festive theme and intent behind the poster.
The Drawings, Prints & Graphic Design department's collection includes the other three sound-themed posters from the 1978 Christmas Party: "Jingle," "Smack," and "Fa la la la la." Herman Miller's graphic design and communications department is known for its attention to employee-focused communication, from holiday parties to internal signage and company picnics. This addition would complete the set and illuminate the full graphic identity established for the event.

It is credited Gift of Linda Powell.

Its dimensions are

89.2 × 58.4 cm (35 1/8 in. × 23 in.)
