Embroidery Silks Case

This is a Embroidery silks case. It is dated 1920–1939 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is leather, paper. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This case for embroidery silks would join a collection of sewing cases, sewing boxes, sewing tables, workbags, letter stencils, and other tools of the art of needlework currently in the museum's collection. The Textiles department has a variety of these cases, from humble calico examples to the elaborately embroidered cases of well-to-do women. They would hold needles and embroidery silks or sewing threads, and might be carried in a workbag or pocket.
The design of this case is new for the collection, as it takes the form of a book with paper leaves to separate the different colors of silk. Its 1920s date and Art Nouveau embossed design also place it much later than the other examples, which date from the 17th to early 19th century.

This object was donated by American Textile History Museum. It is credited American Textile History Museum Collection, gift of Paul Tringoson.
