Pyrrhus is lying on a cushion in his mother's lap. She is drying him with a cloth near the fire, which is on our right. To our left, there are three women looking at both of them. In the background, on the left side, there is a woman lying on a bed. Next to the bed, there are three women standing behind the bed. On the right side, there is a doorway, which is occupied by three more women. One of them has their back to the observer. Below the frame (on the left and right sides) is small text that appears to be the artist's signatures. At the bottom center of the print, there is more text but it is unreadable due to the size of the print.

In an oval frame, Hope, with her hair tied by ropes, is looking at the observer with a look of perplexion. On her left side, two objects can be seen. She is holding a curved spike in her left hand and a rope around her arm. The rope is also wrapped around her waist. She is also wearing a loose blouse with a low neckline and a dress. The blouse is white and the dress is a black color. In the background are a cliff and several mountains. At the bottom of the frame, there are two signatures (one on each side), which are believed to be the artist's signatures: [I.H. Ramberg] on the left and [F. Bartolozzi] on the right. In the bottom center of the print, there is text which reads [HOPE].

An old man, with a great white beard, is looking upward toward the sky. He is looking slightly toward his right. He is also wearing a robe which is visible in the lower left hand corner of the frame. The sketching appears to have an orange tint which makes it stand out more against the white background of the paper. In the lower left and right hand corners of the frame can be seen the artist's signatures. In the bottom center of the print can be seen more text but it is unreadable.
