In 1891, Daum Frères, a prominent glassworks in Nancy, France, operated by brothers Auguste and Antonin Daum, opened a decoration studio to augment their fine glassware. Daum’s chief decorator of 30 years, artist Henri Bergé (French, 1870-1937), made hundreds of watercolor studies from plants in Nancy’s botanical gardens for use by designers at the factory as well as in his teaching.
